Poland Historical Society, Poland, Maine

About

1995 was the date that a group of Poland citizens met at the Poland Community Church parish house, on Maine Street at Poland Corner, to form a committee with the intentions of organizing a historical society for the town of Poland, Maine. This was the first of its kind for Poland. The bylaws were adopted, which set the date for meetings, etc. The bylaws stated that membership is open to all. No restrictions of place of residence and the dues were set in motion. As time went on, 17 charter members were voted in and a memorial fund was also set up in memory of deceased members.

Our first president, David Tedford, was elected to office along with the vice president, Arthur Greely, and a clerk/treasurer, Beverly Tripp, who held the office until 2001. Five members formed the board of trustees along with the entertainment committee. The meetings were held every month from that point on at various locations until 2003. In that year, we are proud to say that we had the opportunity of relocating the society to the old one room school house that was once located next to the old store at the corner of White Oak Hill Road and Route 26. The building was moved to its present location, next to the Town Hall at Poland Corner, on May 1998. A place to call our own.

Since then, we have had many monthly speakers, and fundraising events, open houses, etc. We attend meeting with other historical societies when the opportunity arises, to learn as much as we can on many subjects that will hopefully help us learn more in regards to growing and expanding the society in hopes to make it a much more interesting place to visit and learn.

We are open to visitors two months out of every year and by appointment as needed. Feel free to call us. We are a growing society. Please visit us whenever you have a need or just come in to say hello and view our exhibits.
